When Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana's independence from British colonial rule, he stood at the Old Polo Grounds in Accra wearing a splendid Fugu smock.

That image of Nkrumah in his Northern Ghanaian smock remains one of the most iconic photographs in African political history. The Fugu became a symbol of African independence itself.
